Before you’ve stepped off the ship, this effervescent city will wow your senses. Sailing by Lady Liberty towards the silver skyline, you could be forgiven for feeling like you’re entering a movie set. Our insider, Rachel Chang, is ready to direct you to the action.

JUMP TO

There’s a certain magic that can only be experienced by arriving in New York City on water, the iconic skyline’s reflection glittering in the harbor waters and its gleaming skyscrapers growing evermore astonishing as you sail towards them.

After passing by the city’s southernmost borough of Staten Island, those heading to Manhattan Cruise Terminal will have a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty to the west, with New Jersey stretching out behind her. Manhattan then comes dramatically into view, with One World Trade towering above the sea of skyscrapers. Continuing up the Hudson River, the skyline zigs and zags to the east with some of the world's most recognizable landmarks, including the Empire State Building, which looks rather modest from this vantage point. Those en route to Brooklyn Cruise Terminal will also be able to glimpse Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan in the distance before veering east.

Built in 1935, Manhattan Cruise Terminal has been undergoing a decades-long renovation and has some basic amenities. But its central Midtown Manhattan location is just to the east of Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, providing convenient access to the city’s most thriving neighborhoods. Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is a relative newcomer to the port scene, having opened in 2006. Shinier and sleeker given its young age, the 182,000-square-foot space is in the historic port of Red Hook, showing off a different side of NYC’s persona, with independently minded restaurants, bars, distilleries, and artisan shops all within a few blocks.

What to see in New York

How to spend an evening

New York City shows its true colors after dark. The best way to watch the night lights sweep over the city is by going to one of Manhattan’s high points at sunset. Choose from historic viewpoints including Midtown’s Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center’s Top of the Rock, symbolic ones such as Downtown’s One World Observatory, or more modern ones such as Summit One Vanderbilt and Edge NYC.

Then take in NYC’s ultimate form of entertainment, a Broadway show, in one of its 41 theaters. Same-day discounted tickets can be purchased at the red TKTS booth in Father Duffy Square. Some longtime productions that are sure to be going strong include The Lion King, Wicked, and Hamilton.

Alternatively, only in New York City can you go to a show in the basement of West Village’s Comedy Cellar and find world-class comedians ranging from Chris Rock to Ray Romano making surprise appearances. Other comedy institutions include Upright Citizen’s Brigade, east of Union Square, and Second City in Brooklyn's Williamsburg, both which have been launchpads for Saturday Night Live cast members.

If you’re on the hunt for a perfect cocktail, trending bars include Attaboy on the Lower East Side, Crane Club in the Meatpacking District, Pebble Bar in Rockefeller Center, and PTD (Please Don’t Tell), an East Village speakeasy with an entrance through a phone booth. To witness a truly magical moment, head to Times Square at 11.57pm for the nightly Midnight Moment, when 92 screens turn into synched public art.

How to get around

With Manhattan being an island, note that transportation above ground is always subject to a delay because of traffic congestion and gridlock, especially during peak hours. Generally, the streets are most crowded between 7am and 10am and 4pm to 8pm, but the fact is, New York is New York and most areas, especially Times Square, only have few hours of quiet in the wee hours of the night, after the Broadway crowds clear after 11:30pm and the banking commuters start rolling in around 7am.
