Melbourne - Auckland

2 countries
14 ports
Our festive sailing begins in Auckland, from where we head along the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island to the historic harbor of Tauranga, then Napier to see its famous Art Deco treasures. Next is Wellington, the country’s bustling modern capital, before we cross to the South Island and Lyttelton, from where you can discover nearby Christchurch's rich Maori heritage, then Timaru, famous for its Edwardian buildings and beautiful botanic gardens. From Port Chalmers, visit Dunedin, known as the wildlife capital of New Zealand: keep an eye out for rare yellow-eyed penguins. More nature awaits as we spend three days cruising the glacier-carved Milford Sound, the crystal waters of Doubtful Sound, and the mountain-fringed Dusky Sound. Two days at sea bring us into a new year and across to Australia, starting with an overnight in Hobart, where you can enjoy fresh seafood, marvel at modern art, and meet Tasmanian devils. Port Arthur and its haunting convict history follow, then Phillip Island, home to the world’s largest colony of little penguins. Our voyage ends with two days in cosmopolitan Melbourne, world-renowned for its strong coffee culture.

Itinerary

01.

Auckland, New Zealand

dec 23, 2028

departure 7:00 PM

Set on New Zealand's North Island astride a narrow isthmus between the shimmering waters of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Auckland – or Tamaki Makaurau in Maori – is an urban oasis ringed by natural beauty. The CBD (Central Business District) is brimming with artisanal coffee shops, fine-dining restaurants, and cultural institutions like the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, but venture just beyond the skyscrapers to discover ancient mountain ranges, sculpted fjords, black-sand beaches, and lush rainforests.

02.

Tauranga, New Zealand

dec 24, 2028

8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

11 EXCURSIONS

Delve into Tauranga, New Zealand's picturesque coastal gem, where golden sand beaches, rolling green hills, and a blend of Maori and contemporary cultures create a captivating town. The spectacular Bay of Plenty on New Zealand's North Island is home to the resort town of Tauranga. Known for its fine restaurants, boutiques and galleries, the city is also a hot spot for water sports and a gateway to nearby attractions, such as the geothermal wonders of Rotorua. At the southern end of Tauranga's harbor lies the relaxed beach town of Mount Maunganui, named after its distinctive peak, Mauao, which towers 750 feet above the town's white-sand surf.

Napier is known for producing wool, growing fruit, cultivating grapes and making wine. The city abounds in art deco splendor with iconic landmarks, rivaled only by the surrounding natural beauty of Hawke's Bay. A highlight of the region is wild and wonderful Cape Kidnappers, known for its gannet colony, considered to be one of only two such mainland colonies in the world.

05.

Wellington, New Zealand

dec 27, 2028

8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

11 EXCURSIONS

Arrive in Wellington and its ambitious spirit is clear to see in the skyline of shiny towers. Yet New Zealand's capital is a friendly place with an independent air, where just wandering around the streets is a pleasure, stopping for a great coffee or a glass of locally brewed craft beer. You can delve a little deeper into New Zealand's culture and history at the national museum, Te Papa Tongeriwa, on the waterfront, with stories and objects from pre-colonial days. In fact, at Zealandia, you can travel even further back in time – this urban eco-sanctuary is attempting to restore nature to its pre-human state. Movie fans won't want to miss a tour of the Weta Workshop, the film effects company that worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit among other blockbusters. But find time, too, for a ride on the cable car to the Kelburn Lookout for a spectacular overview.

Further afar, the Canterbury Plains, snow-capped Southern Alps and numerous rivers beckon with their enchanting beauty and wildlife.

The little city has certainly been blessed by nature; sprawling sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, backed by lovely parks and gardens but it's a great urban destination as well, with a warm, welcoming community and thriving cultural scene. Timaru is famous for its Maori rock art and the Te Ana Maori Rock Art Centre offers fabulous interactive tours that retrace the steps of the South Island's whakapapa (genealogy). Once you've finished your tour, head to the main street for Edwardian architecture, retail therapy, and a glass of delicious local wine. If you are lucky enough to be in Timaru as the sun sets then head to Caroline Bay. Not only will you be treated to a fabulous spectrum of color streaking across the sky, but you'll enjoy watching the spectacle of Little Blue Penguins as they come in at dusk.

Step back in time at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed site of Port Arthur, where historic ruins and acres of manicured gardens conceal a shadowy history. Between 1830 and 1877, around 12,500 convicts served sentences and were subject to harsh physical and psychological punishments. Discover the historic site's most infamous buildings and hear chilling ghost tales – if you're feeling plucky. But it's not all eerie attractions: nature lovers can embark on one of many hikes to explore lush forests, dramatic coastline, and ocean-carved caves, including the aptly named Remarkable Cave, where crashing waves pound the sandstone. If you're visiting in summer, don't miss the sights and scents of Port Arthur Lavender, an impressive sea of purple that rivals the lavender fields of Provence.

Victoria's Phillip Island is a haven of natural beauty, famed for its pristine beaches, rugged coastlines, and vast expanses of wetland. Its diverse ecosystems make it a biodiversity hotspot. Encounter some of the country's most unique wildlife, including whales, koalas, Australian fur seals, and the world's largest colony of little penguins, which you can catch waddling home from the ocean to their burrows each evening, in the famous Penguin Parade. There's plenty for gastronomes, too, from family-run wineries and craft breweries to farmers' markets and specialty stores offering artisan cheeses and chocolates. A thriving dining scene showcases the region's local produce. Head to The Store for excellent coffee and classic Aussie brunch, Saltwater for waterfront views and woodfired pizzas, and Hotel Phillip Island for cocktails, sharing plates, and a laid-back vibe.
