Charming town on the French island of Corsica with a rich history dating back to Napoleon Bonaparte. Home to the Maison Bonaparte, the residence-turned-museum bearing the general&#39;s name, this once fortified town founded by the Genoese in 1492 today boasts a Côte d&#39;Azur flair along its trendy waterfront promenade. Nestled between sea and mountains, its magnificent UNESCO-designated Golfe de Porto is part of Corsica&#39;s Regional National Park, renowned for its geologic and ecologic natural value.

Leaving the pier, begin your drive along the Cours Napoleon and past the main square, Place de Gaulle, dominated by a huge bronze statue of Napoleon and his four brothers. Then proceed through the former English Quarter and past Austerlitz Casone Square, highlighted by another monument to Napoleon &ndash; a replica of the statue at Les Invalides in Paris.&nbsp; Soon after leaving the pier by motor coach, arrive at Austerlitz Square, overlooked by the statue of Napoleon. Behind the sculpture is the grotto where the famous emperor played as a child. Continuing along the coast, view the Iles Sanguinaires, an archipelago of four islands sitting at the entrance of the Gulf of Ajaccio. Standing guard over the harbor is the old Genoese tower dating from the 16th century. From here, travel to the center of town for a guided walk of the old quarter, enjoying a stop at the cathedral and making your way to Charles de Gaulle Square, which is dominated by another of the ubiquitous monuments to Napoleon. This one depicts the emperor, astride a horse, with his four brothers. During your city exploration, you will also pass beautiful Palm Tree Square and Maison Napoleon, the emperor&rsquo;s birthplace. Finally, cross Market Square and witness a colorful display of fresh produce before returning to your ship.&nbsp;

Ajaccio Sights & Old Town Walk

Scenic drive through the splendid scenery of the Gulf of Ajaccio before venturing up into the mountains, a rugged, dramatic backdrop of the port blanketed with chaparral that delights the senses with its green oak, cork oak, myrtle and variety of other flowering plants. This shrubland, called the maquis, is so distinctly aromatic that Napoleon is said to have been able to recognize &ldquo;his&rdquo; island by nose. At the village of Cauro, enjoy panoramic views of Ajaccio, the Gulf and Iles Sanguinaires, the archipelago of four islands that sits a short distance from the harbor. As your motor coach climbs higher into the mountains, the vegetation changes from a dense thicket to the lush forest known as Zipitolli, with abundant laricio pine, chestnut and beech trees. Follow a narrow, country lane through the Prunelli Gorges, a compelling sight of red granite cliffs rising above the river, and continue to an overlook above Lake Tolla, an artificial lake created as a source of electricity and drinking water for the region. Pause to appreciate the breathtaking view of the glimmering lake, enormous yet graceful dam and the upper gorge, all of which add to the beautiful tapestry of the maquis. Next, travel through the Mercujo Pass to reach a local cafe, where you will stop for refreshments. From here, a scenic, one-hour journey returns you to the pier and your ship.

Anticipating your exploration of Ajaccio&rsquo;s major landmarks, begin your guided walk on the pier. Admire Foch Square and its impressive statue of Napoleon and visit the cathedral where Napoleon was christened in 1771. Your walk continues along Rue Bonaparte to Maison Napoleon, the house that was in Napoleon&rsquo;s family for generations and where the future emperor spent his first nine years. In 1967, the house became a museum, welcoming visitors to view original Bonaparte family effects, including portraits, miniatures, weapons and documents.&nbsp; Your Ajaccio stroll takes you next to the Fesch Museum, a fine arts gallery housed in the grand, 19th-century Palais Fesch, the birthplace of the museum&rsquo;s founder, cardinal Joseph Fesch. His vision was to bring an institute of arts and sciences to Ajaccio and in that pursuit, Fesch donated a great number of artworks from his own enormous collection to the museum. You will have approximately one hour to admire the museum&rsquo;s masterpieces independently or with your guide, exploring floors dedicated to Napoleon, contemporary artists, and 14th- to 18th-century art. Some of the more famed pieces include works by such masters as Botticelli and Titian. All too soon, it will be time to join your guide for the short walk back to your ship.

Enjoy your scenic, two-hour drive along the curvy roads of Corsica, heading towards the mountains to the San Bastiano Pass, with superb views of the Gulf of Sagone. Following the coastal route and the Gulf, venture through a few small, resort towns before stopping at the ancient Greek village of Cargese. Here, you will visit the two Catholic churches, one Roman Catholic and one Orthodox, a reminder of the old antagonism between the two cultures. Enjoy lunch and then continue to the section of coastline between the villages of Porto and Piana, called the Calanches de Piana. Deriving its name from the Corsican word calanca, meaning &ldquo;inlet&rdquo;. In French, they are called calanques. The road runs through the maze of magnificent and sometimes bizarre rock formations, some towering more than 900 feet above the waves. An old local legend holds that these otherworldly forms were the work of the devil, who created them in a fit of rage after a shepherdess refused his advances. Today&rsquo;s visitors find this to be a heavenly place of impressive views and incredible photo opportunities. These amazing granite pinnacles rise dramatically from the crystal-clear sea, with rocky faces that are beautiful any time of day, especially at sunset when the cliffs turn a burnished, glowing red. No wonder the Calanches de Piana are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leaving this spectacular time-and-weather-worn terrain behind, travel along the road that winds gently through the pine forest and into the jaw-dropping scenery immediately inland. Discover Porto&rsquo;s interior and mountains, as well as the Spelunca Gorges, breathtaking with bare granite walls that plunge nearly 3,300 feet down into the torrent below, created by the confluence of five rivers. Pass Ota, an isolated village located about three miles from Porto. Farther along, see Evisa, with its bright orange rooftops set against the lush background of the chestnut forest. Gaze on fine views across the mountains as you pass the Col de Sevi, situated at an elevation of about 3,600 feet. From here, descend towards Vico, the old capital of the Sagone region, before returning to Ajaccio.&nbsp;
